Ailing Anna puts off UP visit,to address rallies over phone from Pune

Anna Hazare,social activist and member of the joint committee for drafting the Lokpal Bill,has postponed his visit to the three cities in Uttar Pradesh,which was scheduled from April 29,after he was hospitalised for knee treatment.

Hazare will,however,address the meetings,which will be held as scheduled in Varanasi,Sultanpur and Lucknow,via phone from Pune.

Manish Sisodia,a member of the India Against Corruption (IAC),said the first meeting will be held in Varanasi at a college ground in Nadesar area on April 29,while the second meeting will be held in Sultanpur on April 30,followed by the meeting on May 1 in Lucknow. Arvind Kejrival,also a member of the joint drafting committee for the Lokpal Bill,Swami Agnivesh,Jaspal Bhatti and former DGP of UP Prakash Singh,all members of the IAC,will address the meetings.

The administration in the three districts has given permission for organising the meetings,belying apprehensions generated by the fresh guidelines issued by the state government on Wednesday regarding restrictions on demonstrations,rallies and meetings.

“Permission for a public meeting at Jhule Lal Park has been given,” said Ram Sinhaasan,ADM (Trans-Gomti) Lucknow. Sisodia said permission for the public meeting at Cutting Memorial Inter College Ground in Varanasi had also been obtained. Sanjay Singh,the local organiser of the public meeting in Sultanpur,said: “The meeting will be held at Tikonia Park,for which permission has been granted.”
