Army to buy 600 Avalanche Victim Detectors

    Army will soon procure 600 Avalanche Victim Detectors (AVDs) for tracking people, including security personnel, who get trapped under snow in Jammu and Kashmir.

    Official sources said the tender for procuring AVDs has already been issued and the procurement process is likely to be over by December end.

    Brigadier General Staff (IW), Northern Command, Brig G Murli said the process has been undertaken and the equipment is likely to be procured within a month.

    The AVDs, equipped with large LCD displays, show virtual avalanche field positions and double up into a single unit by combining its receiver and transmitter.

    Sources said AVDs will be used in mountainous ares of Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu regions and will be available to troops serving in Kargil, Siachen, Batalik, Sonamargh, Leh, Niyoma, Tangdhar, Kupwara, Bandipora, Banihal, Warwan, Marwah, Padder, Kishtwar, Baramulla, Gurez, Keran, Doda, Poonch, Mahore and Rajouri.
