As robbers continue to strike,Panchkula police seek more personnel,PCRs

Under severe criticism for unabated spate of robberies in Panchkula, the police are set to increase surveillance and patrolling in the district by manifold. The department will get additional force and PCR vehicles for the purpose.

Meanwhile, clueless about the identity of those involved in the daylight robbery at the Sector-20 State Bank of India branch on Friday, the police are now depending on the CCTV footage.

The dacoity left the police red-faced,after four armed men decamped with cash Rs 11.30 lakh from the bank in the matter of nine minutes.

“A lot of development has taken place in and around the Panchkula with sectors beyond Ghaggar and sectors like 20 having developed into full-fledged townships. Despite our efforts, the shortage of staff resulted in lack of proper surveillance in the entire city. Now,we will get an additional force of around 150-200 personnel and patrolling vehicles in order to increase surveillance in the entire city,” said Superintendent of Police Amitabh Dhillon.

Interestingly, after the four robbers heard a police PCR on routine patrolling approaching, they fled away with the cash. Deputy Superintendent of Police Varinder Singh said: “Though we are still to get some clue about the gang behind the crime,we are scanning the CCTV footage that,at some angles, have shown the faces of the accused. They will come in handy for identification purposes.”

At the bank, the normal activities resumed today. “The robbers had full idea about the bank. The wires of the alarm bell had been disconnected by them. That is why our efforts to press the alarm bell proved futile,” said bank cashier Pravesh Gandhi.
