In an attempt to inculcate scientific quest among young children State Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta today promised a sum of Rs 5 crore to the School Education Department to organise science exhibitions for schoolchildren at district and state level every year.

Dasgupta, who was speaking at the 36 Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition, said his department is waiting for a proposal from the school education department so that funds could be allocated for this purpose.

He said that the NCERT science exhibition, which is a national event, was organised in the city after 27 years but the government would want such exhibitions to be held every year in the state.

The minister said that funds allocated under this scheme can also be used for upgrading infrastructure of various laboratories in schools across the state. The school education department has been asked to identify laboratories in the district schools which need to be upgraded, he added.

Will the money be utilized for the projected purpose?By: Educator | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Its all very well to sanction a hefty sum (Rs. 5 crore, in this case)"to inculcate scientific quest among young children", but the moot point is: will this amount be at all utilized for the purpose for which it has been sanctioned? Going by the shabby (and shady) manner in which the Department of School Education is run in West Bengal, it seems highly unlikely that the money will benefit students. Instead, it is most likely to end-up in the pockets of the CPI(M) leaders and their stooges in the department. This sudden urge to promote a scientific bent of mind in school children could easily be part of the last-ditch attempt by the CPI(M) to hold on to power in Bengal by filling the pockets of teachers loyal to them and sundry others who belong to that charming society of pseudo-scientists better known as the Paschim Banga Vigyan Mancha (PBVM).
