Autorickshaws to get GPS tracking devices by end of July

By the end of July, commuters will be able to hop into autorickshaws boasting of GPS devices and get printed receipts.

By the end of July, commuters will be able to hop into autorickshaws boasting of GPS (Global Positioning System) devices and get printed receipts. Transport department officials said they have received the GPS meters, meant to be distributed among autorickshaw drivers, and they are likely to be put in place by the end of next month.

Speaking on the project, which has been delayed by two months, officials said trials will begin from the first week of July. A batch of 250 autorickshaws will be tested as part of the trials, and the project will then be extended to all the 55,000 three-wheelers in the Capital.

Though autorickshaw unions initially resisted the move and took out strikes, complaining that the cost of the device was too high, they came around after the government re-worked the mode of payment. Though the GPS device still costs Rs 7,500,autorickshaw driver now have the option of paying instalments of just Rs 625 per month,a figure that’s inclusive of maintenance fees.

Though the government had set June 1 as the initial deadline for launching the installation process, the date had to be pushed forward due to non-availability of GPS meters. The deadline has now been rescheduled for July end.

The move is expected to prevent autorickshaw drivers from overcharging passengers and taking longer routes. The device will not only display the route, but also sport a panic button that commuters can punch in times of need. Once the device is installed in the autorickshaws, the authorities would be able to track them from the Transport department’s Operations Control Centre, located at Kashmere Gate.

Besides this, the receipt-printing facility will make it possible for Transport department officials to nail autorickshaw drivers who overcharge,as they will have records as proof. Commuters can also lodge complaints if the drivers take longer routes.

As the GPS device is removable, autorickshaw drivers will not have to worry about thefts when the vehicle is not running, officials said.
