BJMC mum on Desai’s possible suspension

More than 48 hours after the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Medical Council of India (MCI) president Dr Ketan Desai,there is no word yet from the state government’s medical education department if he will be suspended.

More than 48 hours after the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Medical Council of India (MCI) president Dr Ketan Desai,there is no word yet from the state government’s medical education department if he will be suspended.

Dr Desai is the Head of Department,Urology,at the B J Medical College. Meanwhile,MCI vice-president Dr K K Nair said the MCI will not delay the inspections due this month. This includes four upcoming medical colleges in Patan,Vadodara,Ahmedabad and Valsad in Gujarat.

Dr Nair told The Indian Express: “I will meet MCI members in Delhi tomorrow. No MCI inspection

will get delayed due to the arrest of Dr Desai. Further decisions on his MCI post as well as the MCI inspections in the four upcoming

colleges in Gujarat and other states will be taken

after the meeting.” He added: “We will soon respond to the state governments about the inspections pending this month.”

Meanwhile,Health Department authorities said

it is up to the MCI to conduct inspections on the

upcoming medical college. But they have not received any official communiqué

for the same.

police custody for more than 48 hours is automatically suspended. B J Medical College Dean Dr Bharat Shah and state Medical Education Director Dr P D Vithlani refused to comment on Dr Desai’s suspension.

State Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas said: “Whatever we know is from the newspaper reports. Besides that we do not have any documents from the CBI,which gives an idea about Dr Desai’s arrest. I don’t know if the documents regarding

Dr Desai’s arrest have reached the General Administration Department (GAD).” He added: “The documents regarding the arrests of any state government employee first goes to GAD. I don’t have any formal communication about this right now.”

Health Department authorities refused to comment on his suspension orders.

Dr Desai is also the

president of the World Medical Association and a

member of the Ethics Committee and Member-Finance Committee.
