With the BJP grappling to come to terms with its resounding defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today became the first senior leader to publicly question the party’s strategy during the campaign saying “the execution of Afzal Guru is hardly an election issue” and “development alone will yield results in elections” because “vikas alone is Hindutva”.

His remarks assume significance since his name was repeatedly mentioned by

L K Advani when the party floated the name of Narendra Modi as “the next Prime Ministerial candidate.” More so, when Advani and Modi’s refrain during the campaign was to slam the UPA on the Afzal issue saying “if Afzal Guru had been Anand Singh (or Anand Mohan), he would have been hanged.”

The BJP won 16 of the 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh, down from 25 in 2004 but still creditable given the party’s performance elsewhere in the country.

Defeated candidates in Uttar Pradesh were critical of the party’s decision to parachute Narendra Modi for their campaign. Jaswant Saini, BJP candidate who lost in Saharanpur said: “Although Muslims are not on our target voters, there are other communities who get hurt by Modi’s loud talk. We were quite apprehensive when we were told that he was coming for campaigning but we could not do anything”.

Speaking to The Indian Express after attending a meet of BJP chief ministers at the residence of party leader L K Advani, Chouhan called for vigorously espousing the ‘bijli-sadak-paani” agenda and reminded the party that the “country always yearns for a united response in face of terror attacks.”

BJP gets wake-up call from ‘star’ CM: Afzal Guru no poll issueBy: Dr.R.K.D.Goel | 19-May-2009 Reply | Forward The BJP High Command did a biggest mistake to send Modiji to UP. They should have known how Modi was send back from Kanpur in 2007 UP elections. There is lot of differences between UP Muslims and Gujarat Muslims. In UP the Muslim and Hindus are having more brotherhood than in Gujarat. The belt from Gaziabad to Saharanpur is a BJP dominated with Muslims in confidence of Hindus. In UP the Hindus are not afraid of Muslims as in Gujarat. In UP Hindus don't need the protection of Modi as in Gujarat. The BJP High Command given too much importance to Modiji. Now midu will also loss the grip in Gujarat.I served in UP from Chakia ( Varanasi) to Meerut, Bagpat from 1955 to 1971. Worked very closely with Muslims.Read the threats now the Muslims are giving to the Hindus of Vadodara for Bomb blast and to kill Marathi's. Now Muslims of Gujarat feel more secured and they have organised themselves with out fear of Gujarat Police.UP Muslims are well organised have no fear of Hindus
Agenda for any political partyBy: Ravishankar | 19-May-2009 Reply | Forward I really doubt whether BJP would ever lears its lesson. First of all it is always the performance which counts, not idealogies. Despite their fairly good performace during 1999-2004, probably the best ever Government to rule India, Congress managed to steal the show under their nose. Atleast now, please talk of only performance, taking the country's interest as a priority instead of harping upon minorities, reservations and these evil talks. As an Indian every one should have the same rights for education and jod irrespective of his religion and caste. Wake up, BJP, set a new trend.
