BJP to keep ‘close watch’

With the Government promising an early passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill,the BJP extended its support to the Bill.

“Perhaps,this Bill was waiting for a woman Speaker… this has given us new hope. Since UPA has taken the initiative,it should also ensure that it is passed amicably. It requires a constitutional amendment and division of votes. It cannot be passed in a din,” Sushma said. Referring to the opposition to the Bill from its allies,the JD(U) and Shiv Sena,the BJP asked the Government to ensure a cordial atmosphere at the time of voting on this issue or come up with a “formula” to accommodate their objections.

Earlier in the day,L K Advani held a meeting of floor leaders of NDA parties where the name of BJP MP Karia Munda for Deputy Speaker was formally endorsed.
