With President Pratibha Patil making a slew of UPA governments promises in her joint address to Parliament on Thursday, the BJP said it would keep a close watch on these promises.
It (Presidents address) is a charter of promises. The Government has promised to fulfil these in the next 100 days. We will keep a close watch to check if these promises are being fulfilled, said the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha,Sushma Swaraj. We will keep a close watch during each session of Parliament on whether these promises made by the Government are being kept.
With the Government promising an early passage of the Womens Reservation Bill, the BJP extended its support to the Bill.
Perhaps, this Bill was waiting for a woman Speaker… this has given us new hope. Since UPA has taken the initiative,it should also ensure that it is passed amicably. It requires a constitutional amendment and division of votes. It cannot be passed in a din, Sushma said. Referring to the opposition to the Bill from its allies, the JD(U) and Shiv Sena, the BJP asked the Government to ensure a cordial atmosphere at the time of voting on this issue or come up with a formula to accommodate their objections.
Earlier in the day,L K Advani held a meeting of floor leaders of NDA parties where the name of BJP MP Karia Munda for Deputy Speaker was formally endorsed.
