Gujarat High Court Chief Justice S J Mukhopadhaya on Monday sought clarification as to how 40 students were admitted in two Sabarkantha-based private nursing colleges bypassing official norms.

The HC ordered for a clarification into the admission procedure after students allegedly took admission through the backdoor route rather than follow the normal procedure as prescribed by the Admission Committee for Professional Medical Educational Courses (ACPMEC).

Gujarat Nursing Council (GNC) Advocate J J Yagnik said: “The court has ordered the petitioners to clarify the manner in which they have been admitted in two Sabarkantha-based institutes: Gayatri Nursing School and Krishna Nursing School.”

About 30 students from the two private colleges had petitioned in the High Court this May,seeking relief for appearing at the Auxiliary Nursing and Midwifery (ANM) course examination. They were debarred from appearing in the examination on two grounds.

Yagnik said: “One of the issue was about their age: the students were admitted against the Indian Nursing Council,1988 rules which stipulate that nursing student should not be below 20 years of age. The second issue was about their admission procedure: the petitioners were admitted beyond the sanctioned seats in both colleges. As such, their names did not appear in the list for the examination conducted under GNC.”

Yagnik added: “Consequently, the court ordered the students to appear in the exams, while it asked that the result be sealed till further orders of the High Court. According to GNC,the sanctioned seats for Gayatri Nursing College is 25 and for Krishna Nursing College it is 15. But both colleges claimed they had 45 seats. The court is yet to find out for the last how many years these colleges have been falsely making such claims and admitting students through the back door. Further clarification by the students and private nursing college will clear the matter.”
