Badarpur to be linked to Metro network today

Following safety clearance from Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety RK Kardam on Thursday,the Sarita Vihar to Badarpur section of the Delhi Metro’s violet line will be opened to the public on Friday morning.

Safety approval comes in; Metro officials expect additional 1 lakh passengers,four more trains will be pressed into service

Following safety clearance from Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety RK Kardam on Thursday,the Sarita Vihar to Badarpur section of the Delhi Metro’s violet line will be opened to the public on Friday morning. On Friday,the line will open at 8am,but starting Saturday it will commence at 6 am,just like the other lines of the Metro.

The line will benefit commuters of South Delhi localities such as Mohan Estate,Tughlakabad,Kalindi Kunj,as well as the satellite town of Faridabad,which is adjacent to Badarpur.

The five-kilometre stretch from Sarita Vihar to Badarpur comprises three elevated stations — Mohan Estate,Tughlakabad and Badarpur.

At present,the footfalls on the Central Secretariat to Sarita Vihar corridor is approximately 1.25 lakh,opening of the rest of the line is expected to bring in an increase of 1 lakh commuters. Four additional standard gauge trains,with peak hour frequency of four minutes,will be pressed into service,hiking the total number of trains to 20 for catering to the increased rush on the corridor.

With the opening of the stretch,Central Secretariat to Badarpur corridor will now be 20.16-kilometre long with 16 Metro stations. The DMRC will now have a total operational Metro network of approximately 161 kilometres with 135 Metro stations.

Earlier,the entire stretch was supposed to open before the Commonwealth Games. But,in October,the DMRC managed to operate only till Sarita Vihar.

In November last year,the CMRS had inspected the stretch from Badarpur to Sarita Vihar but due to incomplete civil,electrical and signalling work,safety clearance was not given.
