The CBI has unearthed a scam running into Rs 12.50 crore in the laying of barbed fencing wire along the border of Pakistan and the LoC in Poonch and Akhnoor sectors.

An FIR has been registered at Trikuta Nagar police station here under various sections of cheating and corruption.

While the manager,V K Sharma,of the National Consumer Cooperative Federation of India Ltd (NCCF) — which was appointed by the Army authorities — and a supplier,Anil Gupta,of Gangyal (Jammu) region,have been booked,sources say the role of Army officers is being probed.

Officials say the Army had awarded a contract of laying barbed wires to a company based at Gangyal (Jammu) through NCCF,a government agency,to avoid the tendering process. Sources say since NCCF is not authorised for

this purpose,the order for supplying barbed wire

should actually have been given to the Steel Authority of India Limited.
