Assam: 3 ULFA militants killed

TINSUKIA: Security forces shot dead three ULFA insurgents in an encounter in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lohit district on Thursday,defence sources said. The joint team of Arunachal Pradesh police and troops of the 26 Maratha Regiment cordoned off and searched the Migru area on a tip-off. In the two hour encounter,three ULFA cadres were killed,the sources said. Arms and ammunition,and Myanmar Kyat worth Rs 1000 in cash,and many extortion demand notes signed by ULFA leader Jiban Moran were found,they said.

Vijaynagar ALG reactivated

NEW DELHI: India has reactivated the Vijaynagar Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) in Arunachal Pradesh after a gap of two years during which it was refurbished and upgraded. This will now enable the air force to operate both the An 32 cargo aircraft as well as the newly acquired C 130 K Hercules aircraft to the easternmost airstrip of the country.

Punjab Cong poll committee formed

NEW DELHI: With Punjab slated to go for polls early next year,the Congress on Thursday constituted an 11-member Punjab Pradesh Election Committee. The committee comprises Amarinder Singh,Rajinder Kaur Bhattal,Ambika Soni,Manish Tewari and Pratap Singh Bajwa. The party has also nominated Ministers of State Preneet Kaur and Ashwani Kumar as special invitees to the committee.

Naveen slips,injures ankle

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik suffered injury in the ligament of his right ankle Thursday when he slipped during morning walk in the lawns of his residence. “An X-ray revealed that ligament in his right ankle has been affected. The CM has been advised rest,” CM’s public relation officer Sukanta Panda said.

Telgi moves Delhi HC for reduction of term

NEW DELHI: Fake stamp paper racket kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi has moved the Delhi High Court,seeking reduction of the seven-year jail term awarded by a Delhi Court in three cases pertaining to printing and sale of counterfeit security instruments. Telgi,lodged in a Bangalore prison since April 2004,has also sought bail on medical grounds. The court has sought a response from the CBI by January 13 next year.

Al Jazeera launches channel in India

NEW DELHI: Qatar-based Al Jazeera Network on Thursday announced the launch of its news channel Al Jazeera English across India on Dish TV and plans to tie-up with other direct-to-home (DTH) platforms to spread its reach. The network is also considering launching a Hindi news channel.

Jagan submits documents to ED

YSR Congress chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy on Thursday submitted documents related to his finances and investments to the Enforcement Directorate,which is probing charges of alleged money laundering and forex violations against him and his associates.

The ED had recently issued summons to the Kadapa MP,asking him to send an authorised person to submit the required documents and answer questions on his behalf at its headquarters in Delhi.

The ED has registered a case under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Reddy and is also probing alleged contravention of foreign exchange rules in his financial transactions and investments.
