British Council to conduct strict identity checks on IELTS candidates

Rob Lynes,the new director of the British Council,India made his first visit to Chandigarh today. During a press conference,he said there are going to be strict checks on students who sit for the IELTS examination after an impersonation case came to the knowledge of Council from Jalandhar.

During the conference,he announced that more than 50,000 students appeared for the IELTS examination in the 2010-11 session. After the case on impersonation in Jalandhar,the British Council is going to be stricter in checking students who will be appearing from now on.

There are five British Council Examination centers in Chandigarh and Punjab region,namely at Ludhiana,Amritsar,Patiala and Jalandhar. Rob Lynes said during the conference” “We might as well put up cameras if required to check any kind of cheating.” He is on his visit to India for the last five and a half months. The major purpose of his visit is to enhance the cultural and personal relationship between the two nations.

One of the officials at the British Library said that there would be constant checks on the identity of the students who appear for the examination. It would be compulsory for students to produce their passport to sit for the examination. Students will be checked for their photograph on both the passport and the admit card of the IELTS examination.

Rob Lynes also laid emphasis on improving the standards of English learning and teaching in India. He informed that there would be e-learning and e-library facilities for people in cities where they do not have access to the British library and to IELTS coaching centers. Rob Lynes is also trying to make it possible for scores in Indian universities be acceptable in UK and vice versa.
