CBSE Class X results: Students to get only grades

When the results of Class X will be announced by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday, the students will not get to know their marks, but would be awarded grades.

When the results of Class X will be announced by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday, the students will not get to know their marks, but would be awarded grades. Also,no student will now get compartment or fail in the exams.

The nine-point grading system introduced in consultation with the Ministry of Human Resource Development will assess the students’ performance using the conventional numerical marking mode. This would be converted into grades on the basis of pre-determined mark- ranges.

Those candidates who obtain the qualifying grades (D and above) in all the subjects, excluding additional subject as per Scheme of Studies, will be awarded a qualifying certificate. Apart from the grades in individual subjects,a ‘statement of subject-wise performance’ will also include cumulative grade point average (CGPA),which is the average of grade points obtained in all the subjects, excluding the additional sixth subject.

While only subject-wise grades will be shown in the ‘statement of subject-wise performance’ issued to all candidates,subject-wise percentile score or rank at the national level will be provided to the schools on demand.

The maximum marks for each subject of external examination are 100,except science where 60 marks are for theory and 40 for practicals.

The practical marks will have two components — 20 marks for school-based practical examination and 20 marks for practical skill-based external examination. In social science and mathematics 20 marks will be for school-based assessment.

A maximum of five subsequent attempts will be given to the candidate to qualify in the subjects. For instance,a candidate who appears for Board’s examination in March 2010,can appear in July 2010,March 2011,July 2011,March 2012 and July 2012 in subjects in which he/she has got E1 or E2 grade,to become eligible for the qualifying certificate.
