CM slams Pranab over special package remarks

The first cracks in the ruling alliance here became visible when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Centre and Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee of perpetuating the Left rule in the state for last 34 years.

The first cracks in the ruling alliance here became visible when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Centre and Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee of perpetuating the Left rule in the state for last 34 years.

Mamata made this comment in response to a question during an interview to a private TV channel Saturday. Asked to comment on Pranab’s remark on Friday that the Centre can’t go beyond Constitution to bail out a particular state government, she said the Centre did something unconstitutional by helping the Marxist government stay in power.

“I did not do anything unconstitutional by requesting for a special package. It was the PM who had promised me that. Other states have got it. I respect Pranab babu. He is a scholar. But I am a person from the streets. If asking for money to pay salaries to state government employees is unconstitutional, let it be so,” she said.
