Opinion in the CPI(M) seems to be divided on West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjees efforts to bring Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee back into the party.
West Bengal Assembly Speaker Hashim Abdul Halim,a strong votary of Chatterjee rejoining the party, said everyone in the state unit would be happy if the Communist veteran returns to the CPI(M). Not only me,but everyone in the party here will be happy. He is such a great leader, such a stalwart. But I must add that we will abide by the decision of the Central Committee. Let us see what happens, he said.
Central Committee member Benoy Konar, however, did not think the issue would figure in its meeting on May 18. This is a sensitive issue. There are many important issues to be discussed and I dont think this issue will be raised on that day, he said.
In New Delhi,Politburo member M K Pandhe said the reason for which he was expelled still exists. The trust vote was a crucial time when he defied the party and supported the Congress. So,there is no reason of taking him back… Chatterjee has not accepted the fault he committed during the trust vote, he said.
Although the CPI(M) Central Committee expelled Chatterjee for not heeding the partys direction to step down from the post of Speaker after the Left withdrew support to the UPA last year, many in the party feel the matter was not handled properly by the central leadership.
