With only 61 days to the Commonwealth Games,the Organising Committees efforts or the lack of it are under the scanner from all quarters. The latest is the Municipal Corporation of Delhi,predicting a dengue epidemic,courtesy the Games construction sites for unabated mosquito breeding.

Making the threat more precise,MCDs health committee pointed to 61 cases of dengue viral fever that have been reported in the city in the past month as against only two in the corresponding period last year.

Despite repeated warnings from the MCD,the Games Organising Committee has been careless. This is gross neglect on the part of the organisers and the whole city will suffer due to it, said Dr V K Monga,MCDs health committee chairman.

According to epidemiological studies,dengue viral fever has a four-year cycle during which the endemic disease assumes epidemic proportions. Dengue viral fever is endemic in tropical countries,which means every year post-monsoon we report cases of dengue fever. Every few years four in case of dengue the disease assumes epidemic proportions. After 2006,Delhi has not experienced such an outbreak but if mosquito breeding is not checked,cases could quickly spiral into an epidemic, said Dr Bir Singh,Professor of Community Medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

In 2006,nearly 50 people died due to dengue while approximately 3,600 cases were reported.

The civic body now maintains that the diseases epidemiological cycle,coupled with the Games organisers carelessness,could cost Delhiites dearly.

Delhi is going to suffer a lot due to the Games. We have prosecuted senior engineers at each Games construction site but water is still stagnating there,leading to mosquito breeding. Engineers are summoned to courts where they have to give an explanation. Despite all these measures,we have seen no change, said Dr N K Yadav,MCD municipal health officer.
