Cabinet clears way for 48 more castes in OBC list

The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a national panel's recommendation for amending the Central list of OBCs, paving the way for inclusion of more than four dozen more castes in about 20 states and Union Territories.

As a result, people belonging to these castes will be able to access the various benefits of reservation in jobs and education, as was recommended by the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC).

The NCBC had sent recommendations for inclusion of more than 70 castes in around 20 states and UTs including poll-bound Uttarakhand and Goa, where elections are due next year.

The Ministry for Social Justice and Empowerment is likely to notify this shortly, after which people in these castes will be able to benefit in Central government services and educational institutions, sources said.

"NCBC advised the central government for amendment to the Central list of OBCs for Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, HP, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, MP, Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and UTs of Andaman and Nicobar, Chandigarh, Delhi and Puducherry," a government release said.

"Accordingly, the ministry would make amendments to the Central list of OBCs in respect to these states and UTs," it said.
