Cables expose extent of US interference: CPM

CPM on Saturday said the remarks were objectionable and argued that the overall contents of the cables revealed the extent of US interference in Indias domestic affairs.

With the latest release by WikiLeaks revealing that the US embassy in India had described its general secretary Prakash Karat as an extortionist during the height of the Left-UPA tug of war over the nuclear deal, the CPM on Saturday said the remarks were objectionable and argued that the overall contents of the cables revealed the extent of US interference in Indias domestic affairs.

The party sought to play down the extortionist remark and focussed more on the cables as having vindicated its oft-repeated stand that Washington was meddling in Indias foreign policy and the Manmohan Singh government made New Delhi a junior ally of the US. The cables8230; provide a revealing picture of Indo-US relations and the extent of US interference in Indias domestic political affairs, it said.

As the cables from around the world have shown, the US pursues single-mindedly its imperialist interests. The unfortunate part is the complicity of the Manmohan Singh government in furthering some of these interests, the CPM said. The manner in which the US intervened to influence Indian political parties and opinion-makers on the nuclear deal8230; Iran, are all laid out. On the extortionist remark,it said: The US diplomat has made objectionable remarks about the CPM general secretary who is not amenable to their interests.
