Move meant to check practice doctors’ practice of accepting gifts from pharma companies and prescribing their drugs

In what could be a big change in medical circles, the Central government is considering a legislation that would make it illegal for doctors to accept gifts from pharmaceutical companies.

In Kolkata, to speak at a seminar on healthcare and medical education, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday announced the government’s latest plan.

The minister pointed out that doctors often accepted gifts from pharmaceutical companies and in return prescribe medicines manufactured by them — even when there are cheaper drugs available in the market.

“This system has to be stopped, which is the reason why the Centre is considering the proposal. Once passed it (the legislation) will prevent government doctors from taking gifts. The law will be formulated and implemented very soon,” he said.

Azad said it is every doctor’s duty to provide treatment to all, irrespective of their religious or regional backgrounds or even political affiliation. He also urged the state government to look into the matter and consider removing the incongruity in the state system.

Talking about distribution of funds, the minister said various units will be set up for monitoring Central government schemes like National Rural Health Mission.

Azad also spoke about the upgradation of the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. “The Centre has decided to give Rs 140 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Swastha Suraksha Yojana. In the first phase, around 288 beds will be added and there are plans that super-specialty units, including a burns unit, will be added in the second phase,” he said.

New law to ban doctors' taking giftsBy: dr rezaul karim | 03-Dec-2009 Reply | Forward the MH was speaking in a seminar organised by the nationalistic doctors' forum. It was the doctor community who brought to notice of the MH about the illegal gratification enjoyed by a section of Indian Doctors. The Nationalistic Doctors' Forum since its inception has taken pledge to fight against infringement of ethics and force government to enact laws to ban the practice. However, its the medical fraternity in this country who are trying to rectify the moral depredation. People like doctor saha who are lecturing from the comfort of a foreign country should better come back to the motherland and take to street, like us to strengthen the fight, rather than asking everyone to follow suit by lecturing from thousands of kilometers. There are more problems in the medical fraternity in India than can be solved by the honorable Supreme Court. It needs introspection and correction.
Deriving Addiction Drugs for Doctors' dictatesBy: Ranjit | 30-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Duty of all segments governing the govt. has increased. With most of the responsible professionals opting for self or endowed cleaning, the clogged and choked parts of sick body called Independent-India. Good thing is the noble leadership flag is held by noble Judges. So doctors' shoulders should be strengthened and outlook broadened. Media section of society has lion's share of responsibility and with maximising effects through Manmohan like ideals'teams. Lastly the first prayers for real Satans to allow the Honests to perform (and His share is offered as per their wishes).
Legislation to penalise doctors accepting gifts from pharmaceutical companiesBy: Welingkar | 30-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward While such a legislation is long overdue, one hopes it has in place provisions that provide stringent punishment to managements- including the CEO and COO of pharma companies. Unless the head honchos see the threat of imprisonment, fines and cancellation of their licenses to manufacture drugs looming, they woud not be deterred from continuing to lure doctors. Every November, Cedember you get to see flights full of doctors, returning from junkets carrying bags stuffed with goodies from pharma companies. This is hopefully the first step in dismantling the privatisation of the healthcare system that we in India are blindly following, unmindful of the disastrous consequences it has had for common people in the west.
New law to ban doctors' taking giftsBy: Dr. Kunal Saha | 30-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The central health minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has certainly thrown a strong punch to the hitherto untouchable medical community in India by bringing to light the long-known sinister link between pharmaceutical companies and a large fraction of the doctors who deliberately prescribe pricy and often unnecessary medicines produced by these unscrupulous manufacturers for their patients to buy. The devious drug companies would return the favor by showering the doctors with attractive gifts starting from small household gadgets to expensive foreign vacations with family all at the expense of the hapless patients of India. Azad has indicated that the government is framing a new law to bring an end this evil nexus between the depraved healers and ravenous medical companies who are reaping huge profits with virtually no control from the inept medical regulatory system in India. There can be no doubt that most of the leaders in the medical fraternity would deny that this is a real problem
