It has been a week since the new academic session at the Panjab University rolled out,and while one would expect classes to run to a full house, that’s hardly the case as of now. But the atmosphere in the campus is nothing short of festive. The place is already buzzing with action and the mood at Students’ Centre, the hub of all action,is already upbeat. The anti-ragging posters are all over the walls.

Dressed in their best, new students are trying to make the right beginning. Even though they look a little lost as they throng the streets, their seniors seem eager to offer a helping hand.

The Department of Indian Theatre gave their session a holy start with a hawan and introduced themselves after the screening of an anti-ragging documentary. “University activities are now picking up with department orientations and registrations. The campus is abuzz with ice-breaking sessions,” said Anuj Sharma,a student from the Law Department, who is busy guiding the new batch to the classrooms. Elsewhere on campus, the concept of hosting orientation is picking up pace. While the University Institute of Technology had a multitude of activities like dance and drama on the orientation day,the Institute of Legal Studies invited parents to make the first year students comfortable on campus.

Members of the student parties have erected kiosk s in order to facilitate freshers to find their way across the campus, and the Hindi Department is busy hosting Teej activities.

From henna sessions to dhol and dance, there’s a lot keeping the students entertained in the initial days. “Cultural activities help us bond better and that’s the reason they are organised during the start of the session,” said Shikha Goyal,a student at the Hindi department.

The college buildings, meanwhile, are pasted with flyers and posters of society auditions and upcoming competitions everywhere. Among them,Global Environment Concern is actively promoting their enrollments,as AIESEC is spreading awareness about its activities and is inviting fresh blood.

Located away from the university campus, the culturally active environment of Mehar Chand Mahajan DAV College is keeping its students occupied. “There are so many people with different viewpoints and backgrounds. The teachers are involved in every

activity and the seniors are also very helpful,” says Sakshi Sinha,a BA first-year student, who is busy preparing for freshers party due on August 5 that will see a beauty contest and a cultural show.

At SD College, students are simultaneously preparing for the Independence week celebrations as well as engaging in ice-breaking sessions with their juniors. They are also logging onto the college’s Facebook page. “Our seniors greeted us with a warm welcome and this is our time to give back,” says Hardik Anad,a final-year student, who wants to spread a student-centric approach in the campus.
