The Congress on Friday re-nominated Information & Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni from Punjab and AICC general secretary Mohsina Kidwai from Chhattisgarh in the Rajya Sabha biennial elections to 56 seats from 13 states.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi approved the nomination of four others: Vijay Darda and Avinash Pandey from Maharashtra,Dheeraj Prasad Sahu from Jharkhand and E M S Natchiappan from Tamil Nadu. The party also re-nominated Oscar Fernandes to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

While the ruling party at the Centre was keen to re-nominate another candidate,AICC general secretary B K Hari Prasad, but talks with the JD(S) were yet to make any headway. While the JD(S) had initially agreed to support the Congress’s second candidate,it backed out later, asking the Congress to field a more “resourceful” candidate, said sources.

Meanwhile, the party leadership was yet to take a call on Commerce Minister Anand Sharma’s re-nomination to the Rajya Sabha. If he is not accommodated from Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh in the current round of biennial elections,he may have to wait for his nomination to the Upper House from Haryana later, said sources.
