Sheila Dikshit flashes victory sign while talking to the media as Cong is victorious for the 3rd time in Delhi.

Putting up an impressive show in the Assembly elections, the Congress worsted BJP in Rajasthan, scored a hat-trick in Delhi and regained power in Mizoram while the saffron party had to remain content with retaining Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

While the Congress got clear majorities in Delhi and Mizoram, it may be slightly short of the majority mark of 101 in Rajasthan winning 74 seats and ahead in 23 others. The ruling BJP has won in 52 seats and was ahead in 26.

The BSP has won four seats and was leading in one while independents have bagged 11 and were ahead in four.

Others won four seats and were leading in one.

Led by Shiela Dikshit, the Congress retained power for the third consecutive term in Delhi, winning 40 seats in the 70-member Assembly in a keenly fought battle.

The BJP, which was hoping to wrest power after 10 years, was left behind at 22 seats. The BSP won two seats while INLD and LJP bagged one each. Results for three seats are yet to be declared.

Bagging a two-thirds majority in Mizoram, the Congress wrested power from the Mizo National Front after a decade, winning 29 of the 40 seats.

The elections, seen as the 'semi-final' ahead of the Lok Sabha polls next year, brought cheer to the Congress which had faced a debacle in 13 states after coming to power at the head of a coalition at the Centre in 2004.

The BJP, which hoped to cash in on the terror card and sweep in all the states barring Mizoram, managed to retain their grip on power in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on the development plank, breaking the jinx of failing to get re-elected in any state other than Gujarat.

Congress gets a boost,By: N.V.SANKARAN | 09-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward The entire media is telling that terrorism did not play any part in the current elections. But, the Congress did benefit from the actions of the Maharashtra ATS which worked overtime to confirm existence of "Hindu terrorism". Look at the timing of exposing the alleged Hindu link to Malegaon blasts. Lalu had tried something less effective attempt when he appointed the Bannerjie commission and publishing an interim report just before the Bihar elections, but it did not work. Then, the entire secular brigade and media unleashed severe hate campaign against Modi just before Gujarat elections. They failed then also. But, this time they succeeded to some extent. Unfortunately, India has enough fools to believe the media hype about "Hindu Terrorism".They have already convicted the Sadhwi and Purohit even before their cases have come up for trial in any court of law. This definitely did help the Congress.
Reply to Dream Boy N.V. SankaranBy: Who cares | 09-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward Yeah because of those fools like you BJP is managing to stay in/get power by hook or crook. Now that those brave Cops like Karkare are out of your way you and your party must really be relieved. Now carry on with more blast and put them on Muslims heads. But I guess Delhi and Rajasthan polls have proved it won't work. Try some thing more sensational for the Lok Sabha election. But make it more convincing. Else be prepared to dig BJPs grave.
Secular winsBy: Common Man | 09-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward IS it victory for secularism? so then in that case Mejority in MP and Chattisgadh are Communal? Vasundhara Raje's arrogence was the reason for her defeat. Shiela Dixit, Raman Singh and Shivraj has won for thier sincerity and politeness. If it would have been vote on terrorism, Congress would have lost. Elections were over when India came to know that it was failure of UPA in Central and State. Those who are saying "Modi"'s visit to Taj at the time of attack was politicisation and people have voted against it, will prove themselves wrong in general elections.
smart democracyBy: A S OBEROI | 09-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward average indian is smart enough to vote for work and not for pitty issues
Biased reportingBy: Shruti | 09-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward This is really sad that media bias has reached such a proportion that a reputed newspaper is doing false reporting. Congress has NOT WON 3 states. It has not got clear majority in Rajasthan. It may for a Govt there, but in polls it is not called a win.
Dynasty VictoryBy: Dhanesh | 09-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward The victory of Dynasty are in mini states. If you see the total MLA's who won in in this election, It would more for BJP including the no. polled by each party. When divided in Lok Sabha constituency, the BJP would have more numerically. The terror attack was not taken into account since the public were stund then
