As last-minute gimmicks to prove the government is on its toes to complete the Commonwealth Games related work on time,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her Cabinet members convened a meeting of contractors working on projects undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD).
Dikshit has now issued stricter orders contractors who are unable to fulfill their obligation by August 31 will be black-listed. We have asked them to make sure all deadlines are adhered to. But at the same time, the quality of work should not suffer due to speedy work, Dikshit told Newsline.
Dikshit has also told the contractors to promptly inform the government about any obstacle hindering their work. If the work is not finished on time for any reason, they will be penalised for not working in the countrys interest, Dikshit added.
While the chief minister claims all Games work will be finished in time,street-scaping work on key stretches, like the road in front of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Mother Teresa Crescent in front of the SP Mukherjee Stadium,is still going on.
The latest deadline issued by the government is now August 31. We want the month of September to be kept aside for polishing and finishing touches, Dikshit added. All construction debris has to be removed by August 10. Dikshit has also claimed greening work underneath old flyovers will be completed by the same date.
The PWD has also claimed that work on marking a dedicated lane on the 106 km of road length, which will be used by Games athletes, will be completed in 15 days. The Traffic Police can begin their trials only after the roads are marked.
Another meeting with the contractors is scheduled to be held on August 10.
