The designated Metropolitan Magistrate Court hearing the Ahmedabad serial blasts case and the Surat bomb case, on Saturday, extended the remand period of Tanveer Pathan and Zaheer Patel till September 10. The two accused, who were brought to the city by the Surat Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), have already spent 10 days in police custody.
Appearing for the investigating agency, special public prosecutor J M Panchal said: “Over the last ten days, the two accused have given enough evidence and leads to the police to suggest their involvement in the Surat bomb conspiracy. The police need more time to extract information from them and get to the bottom of the conspiracy.”
The remand application presented by the DCB states that Tanveer was in constant touch with Sajid Mansuri, a known absconder, who is wanted in a 2001 SIMI case.
The application also says that Tanveer had meetings with Qyamuddin, who has been arrested and was responsible for renting out two houses where the bomb conspiracy was planned. He had allegedly planned the logistics; from getting the LPG cylinders, to assembling the bombs and finally planting them in Surat.
According to the DCB, the search of the two rented houses also yielded banners and other hoarding material that was used to camouflage the bombs.
On the other hand, Zahir has been named by the DCB as the one who had parked the car laden with explosives in Surat and was responsible for programming of the Integrated Circuit (IC) chips that would have set off the bombs.
