In an effort to step up the detection of cyber crimes,Gujarat Police has decided to set up a Cyber Crime Lab at the Police Training Academy at Karai in Gandhinagar.
According to Hasmukh Patel,DIG Planning and Modernisation, the lab will function as a training institute for the police officers.
We are procuring this lab under the state police to give a full-fledged training to the officers for cyber crime laws, detection methods and investigation techniques,as also prevention of cyber crimes in the state, said Patel.
Director General of Police S S Khandwawala said: The decision to set up a specialised lab on cyber crime was taken after senior officers felt there was a need for cyber crime education among them. Cyber crime is emerging as a challenge to Gujarat Police. Cases of phishing, internet fraud, information warfare have increased in the state. Training and expertise of various detection methods is a must, now. This is a holistic approach taken by Gujarat Police to intensify cyber crime detection in Gujarat.
The cyber crime labs will be extended to the commissionerate and the district police too.
He added: The cyber crime lab at Karai will purely work as a training institute. In order to keep the policemen updated about new trends and methods, the district police will set up the cyber crime labs in the city in a phased manner. They will work with the police stations and help the officers in detection. The decision of extending it to the local police was taken especially for the district areas which do not have a cyber crime detection system today.
The cyber crime cases in Gujarat are detected by the states CID (Crime) that has a cyber crime cell.
V V Rabari,Additional Director General of Police,CID (Crime) said: Our cyber crime cells are functioning in the respective cities with a main centre at Gandhinagar. The lab at Karai will train the officers working in the cyber crime cell as also others to develop a grip on cyber crime detection. The lab can be a great help to officers to detect certain cases that have a new or unique modus operandi.
The initiative will also see the involvement of computer experts in the city and district police stations across Gujarat.
The Gujarat Police have started recruiting computer professionals for deputation at different police stations in the state in a bid to overcome the dearth of professionals.
Khandwawala said: In this ongoing recruitment session,we are selecting professionals with expertise in hardware and software. Professionals with a thorough knowledge of cyber crime will be appointed at the commissionerate, district and range offices.
The new candidates will be trained and then put under the courses to be introduced in the cyber crime lab.
