The Prasar Bharati Board on Wednesday began holding interviews of probable candidates for the posts of Director-General,Doordarshan and Director-General All India Radio. While DG Doordarshan Aruna Sharma has been repatriated to her parent cadre and is under a cloud following allegations related to CWG scams,DG AIR Naureen Naqvi is set to retire.
At its 101st meeting, the Board also approved a new and more pragmatic funding pattern for Prasar Bharati, proposing that the government meet 100 per cent of the expenses on salaries and allowances of the employees and 50 per cent of other operating expenses of Prasar Bharati.
The Prasar Bharati will meet 50 per cent of the remaining operating expenses and 100 per cent of the expenses for programming related work.
This,it is proposed, should replace the current format as per which Prasar Bharati is required to generate at least 50 per cent of its operating expenses as commercial revenue. This proposal will now be sent to the Group of Ministers for consideration.
The Board will also forward recruitment rules for 196 cadres of employees in Prasar Bharati to fill the huge backlog of vacancies. Extensive amendments to the Prasar Bharati Act have been proposed in light of the recent questions being raised on propriety and accountability of the broadcaster. The Board desired that the process of appointing special auditors with well-defined functions and internal auditors should also be completed on fast track to allow proper rectification measures.
