In a move that is likely to put an end to the debate in the ruling dispensation over the Naxal policy,Congress president Sonia Gandhi has said that acts of terror should be addressed “decisively and forcefully” even as she emphasised the need for development initiatives to reach the grassroots to address the root cause of Naxalism.

In her “Letter to the Congresspersons” in the latest issue of party mouthpiece Congress Sandesh,Gandhi said that the country was facing an “enormous challenge from Naxalites” and pointed out that 75 men of the CRPF lost their lives in an attack in Chhattisgarh recently.

“Our thoughts go out to the grieving families of those men who have lost their lives. While we must address acts of terror decisively and forcefully,we have to address the root cause of Naxalism. The rise of Naxalism is a reflection of the need for our development initiatives to reach the grassroots, especially in our most backward tribal districts. This is why our government is putting in place more targeted development schemes for our most backward districts,” Gandhi said in her letter.

Her decision to put forth her views on Naxalism came in the backdrop of a raging controversy in the ruling party and the government caused by a signed newspaper article by Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh criticizing the UPA government’s anti-Naxal policy.
