With an eye on the upcoming municipal and Assembly polls,Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee once again raked up the Nandigram issue on Sunday, hoping to put the last nail in the CPMs coffin. Three years ago on March 14,fourteen people had died in police firing in the area.
After the atrocities committed by the CPM in Nandigram,it has resorted to the same tactics of violence throughout the state, said Banerjee at a rally which began from Ballygunge and ended at Bhowanipur.
The CPM does not have much time left to rule the state. We will drive out the CPM from Bengal. The death knell for the party has been sounded, Banrejee said. Riding high on the success of the parliamentary elections and the surge in support for her,Banerjee said the CPM has lost a number of elections in the recent past and will also lose in the future.
The Railway Minister, however, asked her supporters to exercise restraint and follow the Gandhian way of protest. You should not resort to counter violence. We want to give a fitting reply to CPMs violence. However,we should follow the Gandhian principals of non-violence. The voters will give a fitting reply to the CPM and oust them in the elections, she added.
Banerjee also stressed the need for small gatherings. There is no need to hold big rallies. Organise small meetings and rallies throughout the state so that the issue can reach the masses, she said.
The rally also assumes importance in view of the possible visit of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to the state. The Trinamool has been urging Central intervention in the state and party MPs had recently approached Chidambaram to pay a visit.
There were, however, speculations why Banerjee did not go to Nandigram to observe the day. According to sources in the party, the Trinamool chief she wanted to spread the issue to other parts of the state.
