Duo bags medals at international olympiad

Two students from West Bengal have done the country proud by winning the silver and bronze medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2010,held in Kazakhstan recently.

Two students from West Bengal have done the country proud by winning the silver and bronze medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2010,held in Kazakhstan recently. While 17-year-old Akashnil Dutta won a silver medal,Satyaki Mukherjee,18,bagged bronze.

A Class XII student of Barrackpore Government School,Akashnil wants to study basic sciences. His mother,Supriti Dutta,says that Akashnil always had a liking for mathematics.

“He loves physics and chemistry. In mathematics,he has always been keen on solving tough problems,” says his mother.

Satyaki Mukherjee also has an inclination towards mathematics and plans to join ISI Bangalore for a BMath Programme.

Satyaki’s mother,Sujata Mukherjere,says: “I knew he loved mathematics and that’s why I asked to him to participate in the olympiad. I am very happy with his success.”

Ronno Das,another student who was the part of the six-member Indian team that flew to Kajaskistan on July 4,also found honorary mention in the olympiad and was awarded with a merit certificate.

The students first participated in the regional mathematics olympiad in 2009. After winning at their respective regional levels,the students went on to the national level in 2010.

Six students were then selected for the international olympiad in Kazakistan. As many as 500 students from across the globe participated in the final round of the olympiad.
