Power generation in all the hydro power projects on Satluj, Beas and Chenab river basins in the state have fallen by five to seven per cent due to early setting in of winters and snowfall in higher reaches in early September this year.

Generation has dipped from 24 million units per day to 20 million units at Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam’s 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Power Project at Rampur.

Twenty other projects controlled by the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Board (HPSEB) including 126 MW Larji, 120 MW Bhava, Chamera I and Chamera II have also seen a dip in power generation by five to seven per cent less, according to sources.

The power generation is lean during mid september, but this year due to early snowfall in the higher reached, the water level has fallen at least a week before expected. The power supply to the northern grid has hence fallen. During the peak season the generation per day was 36 million units.

DGM Personnel and Administration V.K. Verma said, “The discharge in river Satluj remains up to 300 cusecs till September 15 but

it fell to 200 cusecs quite early this time, following which power generation has fallen by 4 million units per day at NJPC.” However, this would not affect the annual generation target of 6400 million units and supply to the northern grid, as 4500 million units have already been generated in the first six months, he added.

Officials in the HPSEB believe the low discharge in the rivers might be temporary and the water level will pick up once again.
