The south-west monsoon has advanced to South Karnataka touching Mangalore on Monday, the India Meteorological Department announced. Usually the rains should hit Mumbai within one week of touching Mangalore. But we are waiting to see good development of pre-monsoon thundershowers in Mumbai first, said deputy director general,IMD,Dr R V Sharma.
The normal monsoon arrival date in Mumbai is June 10,however,this year the IMD is witnessing an early progression of the south-west monsoon. On May 20,the monsoon officially advanced over the Andaman Sea and on Saturday, the IMD announced its arrival over Kerala almost eight days before the normal date.
However,Sharma expressed concern over the repercussion of cyclone Aila on the weather of Maharashtra.
Usually, when a cyclone hits the Bay of Bengal, the atmospheric energy on the Arabian Sea witnesses a drop. This could affect the monsoon activities in Maharashtra. However,we are watching the weather closely now,and the upshot of Aila on the Arabian Sea will unfold in two to three days, Sharma said.
A depression that intensified into a full-fledged cyclone on Monday hit Kolkata at a severe intensity (measured at T3.5) and moved in a near northerly direction wreaking havoc. Meanwhile,in Mumbai, the maximum temperature hovered around 34 degree Celsius and the humidity was recorded at 72 percent and 61 percent in Colaba and Santacruz respectively at 8.30 am. IMD hoped that the temperature and humidity would rise further,to cause a condition favourable for strong pre-monsoon showers.
