While the formation of Mumbai University Board of Studies (BoS) for Commerce has been stalled, the university has announced elections for the position of dean of all subjects/streams,including commerce,on March 8.
As the dean is chosen by elected members of a particular streams Board of Studies, some senior faculty members and senate members have now written to the governor of Maharashtra, who is also the chancellor of Mumbai University, raising their objections.
The counting of votes for the elections to the Commerce BoS had been cancelled following objections raised by senior professors over a candidates eligibility.
The Board of Studies of various subjects and streams are responsible for updating the curriculum and short-listing examiners. They choose a dean of that particular faculty from among themselves and one of them is then elected to the academic council.
Professor and head of the Mumbai University department of commerce,Dr Vivek Deolankar, said,When the Board of Studies has not yet been formed, how can they announce the dates for the election of deans? They must first resolve the issues pertaining to the BoS elections. All this has created unrest and confusion among faculty members. I have written a letter to the Governor and Chancellor seeking their intervention.
MU senate member Dilip Karande said,First they violate the Maharashtra University Act,1994 for the faculty elections of BoS. Now without forming a BoS they come out with a notification announcing elections for the dean. This clearly shows the mismanagement on the part of the university authorities and we will not tolerate this.
M S Kurhade,in charge registrar officer on special duty and election returning officer of Mumbai University, said,I do not wish to comment on this issue.
