New Delhi: As India probed Pakistani links in the Mumbai Terror attacks, a team of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) landed in Mumbai today to help investigating agencies. Teams from the Scotland Yard and Israel are also expected. Those killed in the attacks included 22 foreigners, including six Americans, a Jewish family and a British national.

The FBI landed even as Foreign Secretary Shivshanker Menon got ready to leave tonight for Washington where he will meet Under Secretary of State (Political Affairs) William Burns on Tuesday. Though Menon's trip was planned weeks ago for bilateral consultations, the Mumbai terror attacks are expected to dominate talks. He is also likely to meet officials from the transition team of US President-elect Barack Obama.

Sources said the FBI team, comprising at least six investigators, will provide technical support to Indian investigators. The "crime-scene and forensic experts" are carrying equipment capable of detecting the type and origin of ammunition and grenades used by the terrorists, suspected to be from Pakistan.

US Ambassador to India David Mulford had on Saturday indicated US assistance in the probe, and the involvement of the FBI team is a step in that that direction. NATO technical analysis of explosives used to blast the Indian Embassy in Kabul had found that the bombs had markings of the Pakistan Army Ordnance Factory in Wah. That technical analysis report, along with phone intercepts by French and US intelligence agencies, had provided "credible evidence" of Pakistan's involvement in the Kabul attack in July.
