For the first time in 20 years,a family court in Pune is all set to form its own bar association,a registered society of the 200-odd practising lawyers in Pune. The idea is to have a common representation of family lawyers in issues concerning lawyers, the family court, family laws and so on.
We are presently calling for nominations for a committee of 11 office bearers president, two vice-presidents,secretary,joint secretary, treasurer and five members. While July 31 is the last date for filing the nominations, lawyers can withdraw their nominations by August 3. The elections,if needed, are tentatively scheduled in the second week of August, said a practising family court lawyer. The association will be registered under the Societies Act and affiliated with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.
Most lawyers are keeping their fingers crossed as far as these elections are concerned since there was an attempt about 15 years ago to form the Pune Family Court Bar Association, which however failed.
It is high time we needed a bar association. It will help in ensuring basic amenities in the court, knowledge sharing among lawyers, holding of various workshops and so on, said advocate Assunta Pardhe at the family court.
The existing family court that houses five courtrooms lacks basic amenities like a library, separate bar room for ladies, lockers for lawyers and so on. With the recent decision that a new family court is being constructed opposite the district court in Shivajinagar,it will be easier as an association to ensure that the new court has these facilities, Pardhe said.
By forming the bar association,we will get a platform to update the knowledge of lawyers and counsellors by holding workshops and lectures, she said.
The family court that has its jurisdiction in PMC,PCMC and PCB limits is considered on par with the Pune district court.
