To come up at strategic public places like markets and roundabouts, they will help police keep a tab on city
The fate of one of the most-prestigious and a multi-crore projects of the Chandigarh Administration close-circuit television surveillance (CCTVs) still hangs fire. The equipment has been lying defunct and disconnected and the officials of the Engineering Department said that it would still take a month before the CCTVs could actually become operational.
The project, which was conceptualised in October 2004,has taken more than five years and still awaits to be launched. The equipment CCTV cameras were fixed at around 16 locations including busy intersections, roundabouts and marketplaces in the city. However, the gadget is lying defunct.
We are still in the process of fixing the equipment, which will take about 15-20 days. Once the fitting is complete, the subsequent process of finalising the software will be completed in another 10-12 days. By November-end or mid-December,we should be able to launch the project, said an Executive Engineer, associated with the project.
Sources disclosed that even the control room for the surveillance is not ready and it will take quite some time before it is operational.
A software has to be developed using which the automatic challans will be issued once the cameras detect violations on roads, including crime, said a senior police official.
Around 156 CCTV cameras will be installed at various places in the city, including 28 cameras at different places in the Sector-17 market and 14 cameras each in Sector 22 and 35 market.
