Flight landing system on the blink, airport comes to halt

Hundreds of airline passengers had to bow down to the vagaries of the weather as the Instrument Landing System at the Chandigarh Airport was not functioning on Friday.

Hundreds of airline passengers had to bow down to the vagaries of the weather as the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at the Chandigarh Airport was not functioning on Friday.

Not a single flight operated at the city airport today with all the flights from Delhi and Mumbai being diverted back to Delhi.

Passengers had to undergo further harassment as the aircraft were grounded for hours at the Delhi airport.

After waiting for hours for confirmation of take off, they were finally informed that the flights would not operate.

The staff of various airlines had a hard time fielding queries from the restless passengers and their kin.

“It was difficult to explain the reason for the crisis to passengers, who were waiting at the Chandigarh airport for the flights to take off. As visibility was not that bad as compared to the foggy winter days, the passengers could not believe the reason for the disruption,” said a member of the ground staff of Jet Airways.

The airport authorities, meanwhile, admitted that the ILS had not been operational for the last six months.

“We had informed the Airports Authority of India about need for rectification in the ILS and it had identified the equipment to be installed. We were just waiting for approval from the Air Force as the equipment is to be installed in their premises,” said Airport Director Suneel Dutt. Over a dozen flights arrive and depart from the airport daily.

“It seems the authorities have been sleeping over the issue of installing the ILS. If it had been rectified on time,it would have saved today’s passengers from all harassment,” said Rajiv Malhotra, who had to cancel his travel plans to Bangalore.
