Four leading women’s colleges of Kanpur have banned students from wearing jeans, tight tops besides other tight-fit clothes, sleeveless blouses and high heels on the campus.
In addition, the students have also been instructed not
to carry cellphones on the campus. The steps were meant to prevent harassment of girls near the campus, according to
the colleges.
Principal of Dayanand Girls Degree College Meeta Jamal said the move would prevent “eve teasing” near the college campus. “Often girls wearing tight clothes and jeans
are on target of eve teasers, therefore it is our duty to take
the precautionary measures,” she said. The other three colleges to announce the restrictions are Acharya Narendra
Deo College,Sen Balika College and Johari Devi
Degree College.
Jamal said her college employees have also been instructed to minimize the use of mobile in the campus. “Only if there is an emergency, staff members will be permitted to use mobile,” she said, adding that even the teachers should wear decent clothes.
Expressing similar views,Principal of Acharya Narendra Deo College Umakanti Tiwari said, “It is the joint responsibility of parents and the colleges to ensure the safety of girl students, therefore the move has been initiated.”
