At least four people were killed as heavy rains accompanied by lightning and high-velocity winds lashed the Saurashtra-Kutch region in the last 24 hours. Though Cyclone Phet spared the state,its side effects have caused casualties in the coastal areas.
Vaga Thakor (30),died of lightning in Mamuara village of Bhuj taluka. Three others died of electrocution in separate incidents in Kutch district. The deceased have been identified as Forum Kerasia (4) from Madhapar village,Mahesh Biju (16) from Makhana village and Abdullah Samanja (26) from Bhuj.
Even as there has been a forecast of heavy rains for the next 24 hours,various parts of the region received 2 to 4 inches of rainfall in a sharp spell that began late on Sunday night and continued till Monday morning.
Winds speed was recorded at more than 50 kmph on Kutch coast,which was in the trajectory of the Phet cyclone. The district,on an average,received four inches of rainfall.
In this pre- monsoon spell,Abdasa village received 2-3 inches rainfall and Mandvi 2 inches while Bhuj,Nakhatrana,Khavda,Rapara and Gandhidham received 3 to 4 inches of rainfall.
Heavy rainfall in Rajkot city throughout Sunday night provided little respite to the people due to the continuous power failure. As many as 13 complaints were registered with Rajkot Municipal Corporation regarding the uprooting of trees. According to the Rajkot district Collector Control room,11 talukas received 1 to 2.5 inches of rainfall.
Various parts of Jamnagar district received 1 to 3 inches of rainfall in the last 24 hours. According to Jamnagar district Collector Control office,the catchment area of Sasoi Dam,one of the important source of water for Bhavnagar,recorded nearly 7 inches of rain.
Low-lying areas in Bhavnagar were flooded following a sharp spell in the early hours of Monday. There were several complaints of uprooting of trees and poles including electric and telephone poles.
Pre-monsoon showers in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad city also received a fair share of pre-monsoon showers on Monday,which brought down the temperature. According to the Met department,the state could experience moderate to heavy rains and thunder showers in several areas including neighbouring Diu,Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Tuesday is expected to be a rainy day.
