  • Former champions Goa just about managed to beat a spirited Railways 4-3 in penalty shootout after goalless extra time to join Services, Karnataka and hosts Jammu and Kashmir in the quarter-finals of the 62nd Santosh Trophy here today. In an absorbing pre-quarterfinal match at the Polo Ground here, Railways unexpectedly denied their more fancied side to dominate them.

The two sides got enough scoring chances in the match but their leaden-footed forwards failed to utilise them and the tie meandered into the tie-breaker after failing to produce any goal in the 90-minute regulation and 30 minutes of extra time.

    Goalkeeper to the rescue

In the shootout, four Goans found the target under pressure and their goalkeeper Felix D’ Souza saved the shots fired by railmen Arminder Singh and Suraj Mandal to give Goa a nervy 4-3 victory.

If Suresh Kumar, Antoni Saren, Subir Maji and Suraj Mandal played an excellent game for Railways, Micky Fernandes, John Dias, Valleriano Rebello and Joaquim Abranches played vital roles for Goa in not only raiding the rival territory but also helped defenders whenever necessary.
