A government servant, due for retirement at the end of this month, has moved the Bombay High Court challenging the different retirement ages prescribed to different government employees. Maruti Patil, who works as the chief accounts officer in Bhiwandi, has sought to fix the retirement age at 60 to avoid discrimination among government servants. Patil moved the PIL through his lawyer R R Tripathi and in his petition has challenged the various resolutions passed by the state government favoring different categories of employees. According to the petition, the state government in 1998 had come out with a resolution enhancing the retirement age of all its employees from 58 years to 60 years. However, the same was withdrawn in 1999. In 2007,another resolution was passed for the benefit of agricultural college teachers thus increasing their retirement age from 58 to 60. Similarly in 2010,a resolution increased the retirement age of medical college teachers to 62. The petition said this kind of differential treatment is creating a divide among the government employees. The state government employees union has also demanded a increase in the retirement age to 60. The petitioner requests that all the government resolutions should be set aside and a single year of retirement should be fixed for all categories of public servants. He further said that it should not lead to any discrimination among government employees in different areas. The petition is likely to come up for hearing in the coming week.
