Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit has said that the Govt was in the process of ‘deciding’ the fate of Afzal Guru.

Under attack from BJP over the indecision on the Afzal Guru death sentence issue, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday suggested that her government was not delaying the matter and that it was in the process of ‘deciding’ the fate of the Parliament attack case convict.

"The government is not sitting on the file. We are just deciding on the fate of the convict," Dikshit told reporters when asked about the issue of Afzal, who has been sentenced to death by the Supreme Court.

Afzal has appealed to the President for commutation of his death sentence into life term and a decision in this regard is pending.

According to the rules, Delhi government has to give its opinion to the Home Ministry, whose view has been sought by the President before deciding on the matter.

"Only the decision has to be taken whether he should be hanged or given life imprisonment. We will not allow Afzal Guru to get out of jail," Dikshit said on the sidelines of release of party's manifesto at a function.

The opposition BJP has been attacking the Congress government for delaying a decision on Afzal, saying it clearly demonstrated that it was ‘soft’ on terror.

"To appease a certain community, the Congress government is sitting on the file for the last two years after the former President A P J Abdul Kalam had forwarded it to the state government for its comment," Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan had alleged.

Afzal was a small tool not the kingpinBy: inpitan | 18-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Afzal Guru was the only person who never directly took part in the parliamentary attack. Tthose who were taking part were killed on the spot by the encounter killing, but this person Afzal was caought simply because his cell phone had the name of one of the attackers. It was a political judgement to punish Afzal, he was not given even a proper lawyer to present his case, it may be a better idea to keep him alive in the prison until the real truth about the real kingpins and master planners come out eventually through Afzal, he may be a useful witness to the tragedy, let a hundred accused get away but be careful before we hang a doubtful case, after all the benefit of doubt goes to the accused. Compare this with a case of an Indian doctor arrested by the Australian police, based on the fact that the doctor's cell phone contained the tel.number of one of the terrorists involved in a terror act in Europe. The Australian court found the indian doctor innocent, though he went through hell
deciding Afzal's fateBy: jayachandran | 18-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Sir, I wont be surprised if Guru gets a life term, as it is likely to be recommended by Sheila Dixit govt.An year ago rapist was given death sentence ,and it was done. But if I need votes from a particular community for the coming elections ,then if Guru cannot be freed at least give him a sort of life imprisonment with all facilities,so that I am secular, that is how the Congressman thinks.Communalism has grown ,just because of Congress and its allies. Now it adds terrorism and Parliament attack too to its credit
Govt in the process of 'deciding' Afzal's fate: DikshitBy: aseem sharma | 18-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward This is a joke. When the Supreme court has confirmed the death sentence on guru , who is the Delhi govt to decide if it can give him life imprisonment? Is it above supreme court? And how long will they take to decide.Till they die of old age? Any fool will tell that they do not have the guts to hang him as 1) riots will erupt in kashmir2)minority vote bank politics
Antinational CongressBy: Prasad | 18-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward There is no doubt that congress is the most communal of all parties in India. It is a party of dalals, greedy politicians without morals and anti nationals. By refusing to hanf Afzal it is try to appease the Muslim community. Irrespective of his religion it should be noted that Afzal is a terrorist and a traitor. When the supreme court has upheld the death sentence what is congress waiting for the last 3 years. This is sheer greed and manipulation. People should throw away this anti national party from all parts of India.
Decision on Afzal guru needs years together..By: Indian | 18-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Madam: your statement "Only the decision has to be taken whether he should be hanged or ...." seems a laughing stock. How much time you require to take the decision. 4 years !! After the next election, if you win, then it will take another 5 years and then again you will say the satement !!!
