Buoyed by the encouraging growth in the FM radio sector, government is in the process of allowing private radio stations to air news sourced partially from All India Radio news bulletins.

“We are preparing a cabinet note wherein we plan to allow private radio stations to air news capsules using certain portions of All India Radio news bulletins along with other add-ons. These could be news about local sports events, weather bulletins and even employment news,” minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni said on Monday. The minister, while addressing a session on future of media at the ongoing India Economic Summit here, said allowing private radio stations to air news bulletins would help in increasing their economic viability.
