The Union Health Ministry could decide on the experts in the board of governors of the Medical Council of India (MCI) tomorrow, when the term of the current board ends. On Thursday evening, the existing six-member panel, headed by Dr Shiv Kumar Sarin, appeared unlikely to come back.
The ministrys problems with the board started late last year after MCI decided to conduct a National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) without consulting the ministry. The ministry struck down the notification as invalid.
The ministry wanted to have consultations with states so that the proposal did not face trouble. But MCI jumped the gun, said an official.
Problems arose again over the proposed Bachelor of Rural Health Care course (BRHCC). The board declined to notify the course, which had been proposed by the MCI under an earlier president,Dr Ketan Desai, and endorsed unanimously by the states earlier this year.
Recently, the MCI and the ministry disagreed over the appointment of the Council secretary. According to papers accessed by The Indian Express, the ministry argued that the secretarys appointment is under the purview of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
The ministry also disagreed with the manner and conclusions of the boards inspection of colleges.
