The members of the Sikh community Wednesday staged a peaceful protest dharna against Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) and Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) in front of Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Phase VIII here. Led by the local SGPC member Hardeep Singh, the protesters, who were holding black flags to express their anguish over what they alleged depriving Gurdwara Amb Sahib of its own land, squatted on the side of a road dividing GMADA office and gurdwara.
Addressing the protesters,Hardeep Singh alleged that on the directions of SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, the SGPC officials have already given consent to GMADA to create public parking on 2.86 acres of land belonging to Gurdwara Amb Sahib.
District Planning Committee chairman NK Sharma and some of his confidants are also playing role in handing over that gurdwara land to GMADA, alleged the SGPC member, while stating that SGPC presidents latest comments that no land of the gurdwara was given to GMADA was simply an eyewash.
Makkar is a liar and how can Sikhs believe a person who can even retract very next day from the resolution on Khalsa College issue passed by the SGPC House, he charged, while further accusing the SGPC of already starting the process to sell 6 kanals of gurdwara land in Sector 80 and 104 in Mohali and SGPC president did nothing to save 23.5 acres of land, for which GMADA has already issued the acquisition notices.
The protesters passed six different resolutions demanding that 13.97 acres of land be officially declared as the gurdwara land; no government parking be made on this land; total of 38.25 acres owned by gurdwara in GMADA area be transferred at Phase VIII as it was done in the case of Radha Soami Satsang; main road in front of the gurdwara should not be closed while planning Phase VIII; for the settlement of the issue, local elected SGPC member should be taken into confidence instead of members from Karnal,Bathinda and Nawanshahr or employees; and projects passed by the former presidents of SGPC for the area like Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra Institute and IAS/IPS training Institute should be made here only, which Makkar has transferred from Mohali.
SGPC member said,Only Chief Minister or GMADA officials should comment on the issue and contrary statements by any other political leaders and locals would be considered as an act to torpedo the issue.
He added that Sikhs would start Phase-wise Mashaal March (torchlight processions) from May 22 if the issue was not sorted out till then.
Representatives from Gurdwara Committees of Phase I,3BI,IV,V,VI,VII,X,Sector 66,70,71,Istri Satsang Sabhas,All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) president Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad,RP Singh of Akhand Kirtani Jatha,Satnam Singh Paonta Sahib and residents from different parts of the city and adjoining villages participated.
