Rajkishore Modi, managing director of the Vedic Village in Rajarhat, was granted bail by the Calcutta High Court today.
Modi, arrested in connection with arson at the resort and seizure of arms and ammunition stockpiles, had filed two bail petitions in the High Court in September. Both the petitions were rejected by a Division Bench of Justice D P Sengupta and Justice Shayamal Kanti Chakraborty.
Today, however, the same Division Bench granted bail to Modi and asked him to deposit Rs 30,000 as surety amount. Modi was granted bail in three cases — murder, forgery and Arms Act — filed against him by the Rajarhat police station.
The Bench also asked Modi not to enter the Rajarhat police station area. But, if called by the investigating officer he should be present in the police station, the order added.
Earlier, the chief judicial magistrate of Barasat had rejected Modi’s bail prayer on August 30 and September 1. Modi was arrested on August 29.
Modi’s lawyer Amit Bhattacharya said: “No progress has been made in the investigation yet. The police have failed to produce evidence in the case. Modi is innocent and he has been falsely implicated in the case.”
