Santosh Sivan’s historical film Urumi brings together Vidya Balan,Tabu,Prithviraj,Prabhu Deva,Genelia D’Souza,Arya and Amole Gupte for the first time.

Produced by Santosh Sivan, actor Prithviraj and Shaji Natesan under the banner of August Cinema,Urumi zooms in on the medieval age, when Vasco da Gama reached the shores of Kerala. It is about Chirakkal Kelu Nayanar,a man who desired to kill Vasco da Gama during his second and third visit to Kerala, and presents a varied version of how the Portuguese explorer could have met with a bloody death in 1524.

Filmmaker Shankar Ramakrishnan, who has written the story and screenplay for Urumi after doing an extensive research, said that the film presents history from a different perspective. “Even a small child in Kerala perceives Vasco da Gama as an explorer, who made the first-ever colonial invasion in any part of the world. But there’s more to him than that. Urumi is an attempt to portray or rather discuss the many realities that could have affected the course of our history,” he said.

The movie revolves around Kelu Nayanar who has a Golden Urumi,a long, curling sword that is made from the leftover ornaments of the women and kids who were burnt alive in a ship by Vasco da Gama. Shankar added that the title is not just suggestive of Kelu’s Urumi, but the feeling of vengeance that we carry in our hearts.

Many popular and talented artistes are coming together in this film. If there is Prithviraj playing Kelu Nayanar, there is also Prabhu Deva in an equally important role. While Genelia D’Souza is the leading lady,Vidya Balan too plays an important character. Tabu appears in a cameo,in a song sequence while Tamil actor Arya too puts in a guest appearance. Amole Gupte,Nitya Menon and Jagathy Sreekumar are also part of the cast. Directed by Santosh Sivan who is also in charge of the film’s cinematography,Urumi features music composed by Deepak Dev.

The mega-budget film that is all set for release boasts of an excellent cast,a well-written story, lavish sets and explosive action scenes.
