In Amethi,Gates opens windows to computers

They had expected the visit by Microsoft boss Bill Gates,what they did not expect were the promises he brought with him. Around 300 women from different villages of Rae Bareli and Amethi were pleasantly surprised when Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates on Tuesday promised to take some of them to America to share their experiences and also ensure that computers were accessible to each of their houses.

Gates along with AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi was on a one-day visit to villages of Amethi,the parliamentary constituency of the Congress leader. The two were expected to spend the night at an Amethi village before leaving for Delhi on Wednesday.

After landing at Fursatganj airstrip around 10 am,they went to the training centre of a womens Self-Help Group in Jais. Gates spent about one-and-a-half hour listening to the success stories. With Rahul as the translator,he also interacted with the women.

After we narrated our success stories,Gates told us that he wants to ensure computer education for all our children and make computer accessible to us. He told us that he would take us to America to share our experiences, Phool Kali,40,told The Indian Express.

During the interaction,Rahul did not miss an opportu-nity to ask the women about job cards under MNREGA.


Gates Foundation to adopt Bihar village

Patna: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will adopt Gularia village in Bihars Khagaria district to help improve the socio-economic condition of the people there,official sources said here. At present,the village,inhabited mainly by Mahadalits,does not have basic civic amenities like running water,electricity,schools and health centres. Sources said,Bill Gates would come to Bihar on Wednesday and formally make the announcement.PTI
