Employees protest against merger of banks
On a call given by the All India Bank Employees’ Association and All India Bank Officers’ Association, a demonstration was held outside the head office of the State Bank of Patiala on Monday. While addressing the gathering, S K Gautam, secretary, All India State Bank of Patiala Employees’ Federation, claimed that despite assurances and commitments made in conciliation meetings that they would not pursue its merger agenda, the SBI management had proceeded with the merger with the State Bank of Indore. He added that the proposal for merger of more nationalised banks is also on the cards, which was not in the interests of the common man, as it will lead to monopoly at a time when competition is required. The union leaders threatened to observe a nation-wide strike on December 16 if the bank managements and government do not stop consolidations and mergers in public sector banks.
