Encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma will be shifted to a specially secured cell in the Thane jail,after a city court on Thursday sent him to judicial custody till January 27. His lawyer Shrikant Shivde had argued that the encounter specialist would be under threat in jail and magistrate R A Shaikh directed police to keep him in a special cell.

The dismissed inspector,arrested last week,is charged with faking the encounter where alleged gangster Ram Narayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiya was killed. Gupta was found dead on November 11,2006,hours after police had picked him up. His brother,an advocate,moved the High Court alleging cold-blooded murder by a police team headed by Sharma.

Bulletproof jackets: govt seeks time
The government on Thursday sought two more weeks to reply to allegations on the purchase of allegedly substandard bulletproof jackets,which have been blamed for the death of some top policemen on 26/11. Government pleader D A Nalawade said in the High Court that more facts and documents need to be examined.

Advocate General Ravi Kadam submitted that they have to verify whether slain officer Hemant Karkare had been wearing a jacket provided by NTB Hi Tech Ceramics,or some other jacket,that night. The hearing is on a petition by RTI activist Santosh Daundkar who says his queries revealed a fraud in the purchase.

Threw shoe at SC judge,now abroad
NEW DELHI: One of four women under the scanner for throwing a shoe at a Supreme Court judge has left for London even as the court is hearing the case. Attorney General G E Vahanvati today told a Bench led by Justice Altamas Kabir that Pavitra Murali of Mumbai’s Boss School of Music,who was sentenced by the Supreme Court to three months of imprisonment,flew to London on September 29.

Murali had been in a group with Sarita Parikh,Annette Kotian and Liela David on March 20 when one of them hurled a shoe at Justice Arijit Pasayat (since retired) during a hearing. The AG told the Bench that the Mumbai Police is investigating how she was granted a visa.
